Global Crude Steel Production Rises in June

Global crude steel production increased in June, driven by higher output in Europe and Asia, mainly due to higher production in India, according to data from Worldsteel.

Total global production from January to June remained unchanged from last year at 954.6 million tons. China produced over 73% of Asia's crude steel and more than 55% of global crude steel, totaling 530.5 million tons in the first six months of the year, down 1% from last year. Despite the decrease in China's production, Asia's steel production remained steady because India's steel production increased by 7.4% compared to the same period last year, balancing the decline.

India's crude steel production has been rising steadily, making it the second-largest producer globally. This growth is due to high demand, particularly from the booming automotive industry, which accounts for 8-10% of India's steel demand.

Europe's steel production increased by 5% year-on-year in June, driven by higher production in Germany. However, European production remained stable compared to the same period last year in the first six months due to lower output from the Czech Republic and Italy.

Iran produced 16.7 million tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) in the first six months, making it the largest DRI producer among the 13 leading DRI-producing countries, which collectively accounted for 91.5% of global DRI production.

Iran also saw a 6% increase in crude steel production during the same period, driven by strong domestic demand for new large-scale infrastructure projects initiated by the government.

Other European countries recorded the highest growth in steel production, supported by Turkey's output rising by 17%, reaching 18.6 million tons in the first six months of the year due to the commissioning of new capacity this year.
