SAIL to Expand Rourkela Steel Plant Capacity
[tintuc]
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) plans to significantly expand the capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) from 4.5 million tonnes per year to 9 million tonnes per year. This expansion project is expected to boost India's steel production capacity and contribute to the country's economic growth.
The decision to expand RSP's capacity was announced by Sandeep Pondrik, Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, during a meeting with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The expansion project is expected to require an estimated capital investment of $3.6 billion.
However, the project has faced some challenges due to encroachments on surplus land required for the expansion. The central government had previously deferred the project due to unresolved land issues. To proceed with the expansion, SAIL will need to acquire an additional 2,000 acres of land, which is currently not under the control of the company.
Despite these challenges, SAIL remains committed to expanding RSP's capacity. The company believes that the project will not only increase steel production but also create jobs and boost the local economy of Odisha. The expansion is expected to have a positive impact on India's steel industry and contribute to the country's overall development.
