Brazilian Flat Steel Distributors Boost Sales in August

Sales of flat steel products by Brazilian distributors reached 350,100 metric tons (mt) in August, a 4.3 percent increase compared to July, according to the sector institute INDA.

Acquisitions by the distributor chain linked to INDA also rose by 5.3 percent to 368,000 mt, while inventories increased by 1.9 percent to 961,100 mt, equivalent to 2.7 months of consumption.

Imports in August surged by 31.3 percent from July, reaching 287,900 mt, including heavy plates, hot rolled coils (HRC), cold rolled coils (CRC), zinc-coated, hot-dipped galvanized (HDG), prepainted, and Galvalume steel.

Compared to August 2023, sales increased by 2.0 percent, acquisitions by 6.4 percent, and imports by 24.7 percent.

For September 2024, INDA forecasts a slight decline in acquisitions and sales by 3.0 percent from August levels.

Carlos Loureiro, president of INDA, mentioned that there are no immediate price increase announcements for flat steel products by steel producers. However, he suggested that prices might rise in the fourth quarter as import quotas approach their limit and import taxes increase.

Loureiro emphasized that Brazil does not have specific problems with steel product imports, except for those from China, which he believes are being dumped at low prices. He cited the example of August imports, where 99.5 percent of HRC, 94.5 percent of CRC, and 95.5 percent of zinc-coated products were imported from China.
