ArcelorMittal Spain Temporarily Idles Gijón Steelworks and Wire Rod Plant

ArcelorMittal Spain, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal, has announced the temporary suspension of production at its Gijón steelworks and Veriña wire rod plant.

Effective October 18, 2024, the wire rod production operations at the Veriña plant were halted. On October 20, the Gijón steelworks also ceased operations. The suspensions are attributed to weak demand and a lack of orders, primarily due to the increase in low-priced steel imports.

Both facilities are scheduled to resume operations on October 27, 2024. The temporary shutdowns are expected to affect more than 400 workers.

This decision reflects the challenging market conditions faced by the Spanish steel industry, which has been impacted by increased competition from imported steel products. The temporary suspension of production at Gijón and Veriña highlights the need for the company to adjust its operations in response to changing market dynamics.
