Brazil's flat steel distributors saw a decline in sales in September, according to the sector institute, INDA. Sales reached 327,100 metric tons (mt), a 6.6% decrease compared to August.
Meanwhile, acquisitions by distributors linked to INDA decreased by 7.2% to 341,500 mt, while inventory levels increased by 1.5% to 975,600 mt, equivalent to 3 months of consumption. The sector considers this inventory level as "not comfortable."
Imports in September increased by 0.6% from the previous month, reaching 289,500 mt, including heavy plates, hot rolled coil (HRC), cold rolled coil (CRC), zinc-coated, HDG, pre-painted, and Galvalume products.
Compared to September 2023, sales increased by 1.2%, acquisitions increased by 5.8%, and imports declined by 6.5%.
For October 2024, INDA expects acquisitions and sales to increase by 5.0% from August.
Carlos Loureiro, president of INDA, highlighted the ongoing issue of dumping imports, particularly from China. He mentioned that in September, Chinese imports accounted for 81.6% of HRC imports, 85.6% of CRC imports, and 90.9% of zinc-coated product imports.
