Scaw Metals Achieves Milestone with First HRC Production
[tintuc]
South African steel producer Scaw Metals has successfully produced its initial slabs and hot-rolled coils (HRC) at its Johannesburg Works. The production was made possible by the installation of a new slab caster and hot strip mill, both supplied by Italian plantmaker Danieli.
The newly produced HRC will be utilized to feed the downstream pipe mills of Barnes Group, the controlling shareholder of Scaw Metals, as well as other flat product consumers.
In January 2023, Scaw Metals selected Danieli's technology to expand its product portfolio and increase production capacity, positioning the Johannesburg Works as a hub for flat steel production in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The new slab caster has an annual capacity of 650,000 metric tons, producing high-quality slabs in various widths. The hot strip mill is capable of rolling hot strip in widths ranging from 1.2 to 8.0 millimeters. Additionally, a new water treatment plant and a modern electric arc furnace (EAF), also supplied by Danieli, are scheduled to commence operations in the coming months.
