A groundbreaking ceremony recently marked the start of an ambitious electric-arc furnace (EAF) project by Donghua Iron & Steel in Tangshan, Hebei province, featuring the installation of two cutting-edge Danieli Zerobucket EAFs. This development signals a significant step forward in steelmaking efficiency and sustainability.

The Danieli Zerobucket technology stands out for its continuous and adaptable charging system, capable of processing a mix of metallics—including scrap, direct reduced iron (DRI), hot briquetted iron (HBI), and hot metal—while achieving remarkably fast tap-to-tap times. For Donghua Steel, the new EAFs will produce liquid steel every 33 minutes when using scrap, and up to 40% hot metal, with the cycle including hot metal decarburization. By continuously feeding preheated scrap through process off-gases and eliminating the need to open the furnace roof for bucket charging, the system delivers energy savings of 50 kWh per ton, combining both electrical and chemical efficiencies.

Equipped with the Danieli Q-Reg electrode-regulation system for precise arc control and a sand EBT (eccentric bottom tapping) filling system for enhanced safety, the Zerobucket EAFs promise superior performance. Compared to traditional EAFs, this technology reduces power-on time by 10% and slashes power-off time by 40-50%, boosting productivity while cutting energy use and operational costs. Additionally, it significantly lowers direct emissions, aligning with greener steelmaking practices.

The two furnaces are slated to begin operations in the second quarter of 2026. With 31 orders already placed in China, the Danieli Zerobucket EAF has emerged as a leading trend in the country’s steel industry, driving transformation and modernization. For Donghua Steel, this project underscores a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in a competitive global market.
