Indian companies JSW Steel and Tata Steel increased their crude steel production in India compared to the previous year during the financial year from April 2024 to March 2025. This was helped by expanding their production capacity.
JSW Steel produced nearly 27 million tons of crude steel in India during the 2024-25 financial year, up 6% from the year before. In the January-March period, the last quarter of the financial year, JSW’s production in India rose 9% from the previous quarter and 13% from the year before, hitting a record high of 7.4 million tons.
Tata Steel said its crude steel production in India grew 5% from the previous year, reaching 21.8 million tons in the 2024-25 financial year. In the January-March quarter, the company’s production in India was 2% higher than the year before at 5.51 million tons but dropped 3% from the previous quarter.
Both companies increased output thanks to recent additions to their production capacity in India. JSW Steel expanded its facility in Vijayanagar, Karnataka. Tata Steel started operating a new blast furnace with a capacity of 5 million tons per year at its Kalinganagar plant in September 2024.
JSW’s total crude steel production rose 12% from the year before in the January-March period, even though output from its U.S. operations fell compared to the same time last year.
JSW used 93% of its production capacity in India in the fourth quarter, up from 91% in the previous quarter.
JSW Steel’s current crude steel production capacity in India is 34.2 million tons per year, including 5 million tons still being tested.
Tata Steel’s sales in India for January-March grew 3% from the year before, reaching 5.6 million tons. The company’s domestic sales for the 2024-25 financial year were 20.94 million tons, up 5% from the previous year.
Liquid steel production from Tata Steel’s Netherlands unit jumped 40% from the year before in the 2024-25 financial year because its blast furnace number 6 returned to normal after repairs last year. Liquid steel output in the UK dropped 64% from the year before in the same period. Tata Steel closed both its blast furnaces in the UK late last year and now processes purchased slabs to make downstream products.
Tata Steel’s total crude steel production capacity is now 35 million tons per year.
